Cassilis and Tongio West
Cassilis is a former mining settlement, 114 km north of Bairnsdale and 13 km south of Omeo in East Gippsland. It lies in the narrow valley of Gray's Creek, a tributary of Swifts Creek, itself a tributary of the Tambo River. Tongio West is 4 km east of Cassilis.
Alluvial gold was discovered in a number of creeks in the area during the 1850s. A rush at the junction of Swift's Creek and Gray's Creek became known as Long Gully. Large numbers of Chinese worked in gullies further up the valley. The area was deserted a few years later as gold was found in other areas.
