Minyip, a rural town in the Wimmera region, is at the intersection of roads between Warracknabeal, Murtoa and Stawell. None of the roads is a main one, but their existence probably accounts for the Minyip township being surveyed at its present location in 1875. Farm selections were taken up in the district from about 1873.
It is thought that the name was derived from Aboriginal words meaning ashes or camping place.
