Mailors Flat
Mailors Flat is a rural/residential locality in western Victoria, 8 km north of Warrnambool. It was named after Robert Mailor who took up a pastoral run extending westwards to Koroit in 1842.
The area underwent settlement as small farms during the early 1870s, and a school was opened in 1873. It developed as a dairying and agricultural district and was described in 1903 in the Australian handbook:
After Nestle opened its condensed milk factory at Dennington in 1911, a milk depot was opened at Mailors Flat. After World War II the Warrnambool airport was laid out 1 km west of the village. More recently Mailors Flat’s proximity to Warrnambool has led to it becoming a rural/residential area, enabling survival of the general store, but not the school which closed in 1994.
A plan was made in 2014 to renovate the community hall with a new carpark, public toilets, barbecue area, landscaping and improved drainage and to relocate the tennis courts to an adjacent block of land at the rear of the hall.
